Looking to do home improvements or just curious about what tools you will need to do a lot of different woodwork around the home or wherever.
Circular saw
A circular saw is a type of motorized saw that consists of a motor, round saw, handle, guide, and safety guard.
Circular saw uses
It is mainly used to cut straight lines at all kinds of angles on most wood and wood profiles you find at home.
It is best used to cut long straight lines out of wooden sheets or slabs.
Miter saw
A miter saw looks like a circular saw that has been placed onto a miter gauge. It consists of a circular saw on the top with a spring hinge connecting it onto the miter gauge.
Miter saw uses
It is used to cut wooden planks, bars, 2x4s, and similar longitudinal profiles. You simply set an angle on the gauge, place in the wood, tighten the clamp, and press down the saw to cut.
Best used to cut angles out of squared profiles, but can be used to cut rounded profiles.
Jigsaw
A jigsaw is a handheld reciprocating saw that faces down. It consists of a body with a motor, handle, guide, and a saw blade.
Jigsaw uses
A jigsaw is used to cut profiles out of wooden or thin metal sheets. This is best achieved by following a pre-drawn pattern on the sheet
Best used for small curved patterns or small cutouts on wooden or metal sheets. If you want to cut long straight lines then it will be better to use a circular saw.
Reciprocating saw
A reciprocating saw is a multipurpose saw that is mainly used for destruction purposes. It has a saw blade in front that can easily be interchanged with different blades with varying TPIs (Teeth per inch). It is also a great replacement for a hack saw.
Reciprocating saw uses
As reciprocating saws are mainly used for destruction, they should only really be used to cut off or cut out rough work. Some examples might be to cut off excess wood in awkward positions where other saws won’t fit, trim branches, or wherever you will use a hack saw.
Random orbital sander
A random orbital sander is an electric tool used to sand down or smoothen wooden surfaces. It works by rotating and vibrating a round piece of sand paper that can be of different girds. The difference between orbital sanders and finishing sanders. Finishing sanders are usually square-shaped it only vibrates in a circular motion.
Electric planer
An electric planer consists of a body, handle with a trigger, a flat bottom surface(shoe), and a rotating cutting head with two or more blades.
Electric planer uses
A lot like a hand planer an electric planer is used to smoothen or flatten rough surfaces of wood.
It is best used on untreated wood because they tend to still be in a rough state. It is best to first plane your wood before you use any sort of sander.
Drills
Drills are probably the most common electric tool out there. They come in a multitude of forms from a hand drill to a pillar drill.
Uses of a drill when working with wood.
A drill is mainly used to make circular holes in the wood. These holes can be used as a guide for screws or just to prevent the screw from splitting the wood. Large circular holes can also be cut using a circular saw that can easily be placed into a chuck.
Small battery-powered handheld drills are optimal for driving in and removing screws from wood. I did a complete post on handheld drills you can check out.
Conclusion
Looking for more information on these items. I made a playlist on these tools that you can check out on youtube. These aren’t my own videos, just a collection of others that I found very informative and useful.
